Indiana Jones

Indiana Jones

Portrait of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones

Working on a portrait of the eternal bad-ass, Harrison Ford, in one of his many iconic roles – Indiana Jones. This film, on the heels of Star Wars cemented Harrison Ford’s legacy as a bona fide movie star and action hero.

The video shows a bit of the piece in its unfinished state; exposing some of the details that seem to get lost in the compression used for sharing on the web.

Alternative Movie Poster for Indiana Jones

I also created a simple alternative movie poster using the portrait for an Indiana Jones serial film. In another era, we would have had numerous Indy films; Lucasfilm tried to stretch the storyline out with the Young Indiana Jones television series but Hollywood has changed over the years and blockbusters were favored over series. Although with the Marvel Cinematic Universe those two are no longer mutually exclusive.

Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood

Portrait of Clint Eastwood

Portrait of the classic man with no name character from Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns and the series that made Clint Eastwood famous. As a kid growing up, these films were my introduction to Westerns, as a film genre, as well as the movie star idol.

The video above, shows some of the detail strokes that become somewhat obscured as the image has scaled down in size. This is an unfortunate byproduct of the compression used for .jpg files.

This illustration was created with custom brushes and patterns in Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.

Logan, revisited

Logan, revisited

Portrait of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine

Portrait of Hugh Jackman in his iconic role as The Wolverine, James Howlett, or more simply, Logan. It is difficult to imagine any other actor portraying this character since Hugh Jackman has inhabited this character for 17 years.

This portait was created using custom brushes and patterns while trying to combine the traditional digital technique I have used for many portraits with the newer intaglio techniques in order to give more texture or grit to the piece. In the detailed image above, you can see the combination of these layers on this piece.

I have also created an alternative movie poster using the portrait as the base of the concept to share along with the movie poster community at PosterSpy

You can see the work in progress in the above linked clip from YouTube. These illustrations were created using Corel Painter, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop.

Furiosa

Furiosa

Portrait of Charlize Theron as Furiosa

Intaglio-styled portrait of Charlize Theron as Furiosa from George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road”. Charlize is arguably the best action hero working in Hollywood today; her characters are empathetic and her action is authentic and entirely vulnerable and human in her roles.

The details of the image, as seen above, are created through multiple layers of varying line widths, densities, and tonality. This is done to create a more textural image and reflective of the illustrations created using traditional engraving techniques.

This alternative movie poster was created with a focus on that iconic look of Furiosa with her shaved head and blackened skull that highlights Charlize’s piercing stare. These illustrations were created in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

An intaglio-styled portrait of Keanu Reeves as John Wick for the upcoming fourth installment in the franchise.

Alternative movie poster concept for John Wick 4

A lot of work goes into these illustrations and many things can change throughout the process – especially as you translate an illustration into a poster concept. This is a simple portrait using the refinements to my engraving, or intaglio, technique that uses custom patterns created in Adobe Illustrator to mimic the effect of an engraved piece.

This image was created using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

Black Widow illustrations

Black Widow illustrations

Portrait of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow

Marvel’s Black Widow has finally been released, in theaters and on Disney+, and it provides a lot more detail on Scarlett Johansson’s alter-ego. The long-awaited film provides more detail on Natasha (nee Natalia) and her brief time in America as a child of Russian spies and what led her to become a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.

Black Widow illustration

Black Widow has been a fan-favorite since she arrived in Iron Man 2 and this film is long overdue. The story is very engaging and the cast is excellent with Florence Pugh stealing most scenes as Natasha’s younger “sister”.

Portrait of Florence Pugh as Yelena from Black Widow

These illustrations are my tribute to the fandom as well as examples of my continued experimentation in combining traditional techniques to the digital realm. I am replicating the style of traditional engraver’s marks into these pieces, while also combining the digital painting techniques in the first portrait of Scarlett in the post.

Ultimately, creating a few alternative movie poster concepts that I share with the artist community over at PosterSpy.

I was recently asked about my illustrations and the reasoning behind their creation. And, simply put, I am an artist. I create for my vocation as well as my avocation, just different topics and motivations.

These illustrations allow me to think about something else with no limits and it rejuvenates my creativity and inspires me as I look to solve other problems in my other career – enterprise software design and design leadership.

The ability to detach from the focus on X-problem increases my distance and perspective on the challenges at hand and helps to deliver clarity in: 1.) creating a piece of artwork I like, and 2.) percoluting solutions to the challenges of leading a large team of designers on complex enterprise software for a global company.

I find this a great way to create a balance in my creative energies.
