Design is an answer to a question and the teams that I lead have been answering those questions for businesses in the entertainment, travel, advertising, and cloud computing verticals for years. From designing the first-ever event website to promote the opening of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park to launching IBM’s commerce platform, I have led teams that deliver value to the business goals while advocating for our users to ensure the intent of the business aligns with the impact to the end-user.

As John Watson, Jr. stated, many years ago when he took over IBM, that “good design is good business” and Apple’s rise as one of the most valuable companies in the world affirms, design-driven businesses enables customer empowerment, shareholder value, and opportunistic growth for those willing to answer the real questions that challenge businesses today.

Director of Product Design

Bishop Fox
June 2022 – January 2023

In this new role as their first Director of Design I was commissioned to establish design as a key discipline in Bishop Fox. This began by instituting practices, procedures, and design rituals to deliver design at scale as we develop future-forward strategic vision for our products and services.

A key focus was building a new design team while also partnering with peers in product, engineering, and sales on the vision and mission. My goals were to shape a vision for the evolving and growing product line that was informed by our customer’s needs, backed in data on product usage, and translating that into a design strategy on which the team could deliver.

Some of the initial deliverables were building workflows to support the service design, experience design, and design operations, as well as the strategic vision of executive leadership for customers across the enterprise.

  • Establish user interviews as a primary means of design research in the initial phases of the new design process to uncover pain points as well as understand their behavior in the use of the product.
  • Codify our user journeys, directly informed by their input, and deliver enhanced workflows and that bias our users towards action.
  • Introduce usability testing as a key means to iterate designs and refine the process to ensure we were solving the right problems at the right times for the customer and business.
  • Focus on tech-enabling the cybersecurity functions of the Bishop Fox team of analysts and operators to scale their output effectively and grow the business opportunities.
  • Institute the processes necessary for a design within the organization by scoping a career ladder for the cybersecurity design professional.
  • Build the collaborative environment with peers in engineering and product to support the goals of the iterative environment to build, release, and iterate based upon learnings from our customers and burgeoning analytics data.
