Jack

Portrait of Jack Nicholson from "The Shining"

There are some stars that can be easily identified by their first name: Marilyn, Greta, Madonna. However, there is only one Jack, really. This is a portrait of the legendary Jack Nicholson in his role as Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of “The Shining”, by Steven King

There are lots of great stories about Jack over the years and his performances. This character has to be one of his most recognizable and oft-quoted portrayals in his long and storied career. Jack’s performance, as usual, raised the expectations of every horror movie to follow after this film was released.

Alternative movie poster design for Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of "The Shining" by Steven King

I have created an alternative movie poster for this illustration to share on my profile at PosterSpy, but I really like the simple portrait without the titling and credit blocks of the poster.

These portraits were created using Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.

Revenge of the Sith

Revenge of the Sith

Alternative version of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader

Despite my love for the Star Wars universe of stories, I just cannot bear the prequels like “Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith“. To me, they seemed to be an indoctrination tool for another generation to sell toys. The action sequences are absolutely phenomenal; I was doing a lot of post work at the time and reading about the roughly 1,600 pre-composition shots that actually ended up in the final film was mind-blowing.

However, the storyline and the acting were never to the level that matched the rest of the production value of the films. This third prequel, “Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith” is probably the best of the lot but they were never really my cup of tea. With the new Obi-Wan series for Disney+ I did want to illustrate the young Jedi master before he makes his resurgence so I chose a split portrait with Sith & Jedi.

I reworked the layout as well as the intaglio layering a couple of times – making them larger and a bit rougher than some of my recent paintings. The technique is an evolving one that requires constant experimentation that I will continue to push through the new year.

These portraits were created using Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.

Planet of the Apes

Illustration inspired by the original 1968 classic, “The Planet of the Apes” starring Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, and Kim Hunter.

I remember seeing this movie, and subsequent sequels, as a kid and being enamored and horrified by the premise. Later on in my youth there was also a television series which was one of the first primetime shows I was hooked on.

The remakes have been fun but none of them have captured the feel of this original film and the incredibly melodramatic acting of the great Charlton Heston.

The Book of Boba Fett

The Book of Boba Fett

Illustration for "The Book of Boba Fett" on Disney+

Spent the weekend taking down all of the holiday decorations, which is always a somewhat somber occassion in our household. I also spent some time cheering myself up with this new illustration inspired by the great new series, “The Book of Boba Fett” on Disney+

Although the pacing of the first two episodes is a little slower than I am hoping for, I remember the punch we got later in the Loki, WandaVision, and Mandalorian shows on the network and bracing myself for some great things from the series.

This illustration highlights not only Boba Fett but also Fennic Shand, played by the incomparable Ming-Na Wen. These portraits were created using Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.

2021 Illustrations

2021 Illustrations

2021b_0000_Layer Comp 1Portion of illustrations made during 2021

The end of the year can provide an opportunity for reflection. Although these are not all of the works I created this year, this is a good representation of the illustrations made during 2021, Pandemic Year 2.

Spending much of the year experimenting with tools, techniques, and workflows in order to better replicate traditional art techniques using all digital tools.

All of the work in 2021 focused on pop culture icons and themes from my childhood; ranging from the Marvel characters I love to the science-fiction of H.R. Giger.

I had some great personal accomplishments throughout the year. First and foremost being told by the legendary Mark Hamill that he loved my portrait of himself to attaining my first licensed works for 3 key properties: Aliens, Halloween, and Hannibal.

I also had the chance at a few collaborations that resulted in 2 gallery shows in London as well as inclusion of a new book that showcased the #TerrorTwos art project created by my friends Si and Cherie

I am looking forward to a prosperous and productive 2022 as I continue to push the boundaries of the tools I use from Adobe and Corel, as well as incorporate traditional techniques whenever possible.

Brett

Brett

Work in progress of portrait of Harry Dean Stanton as Brett from "Alien"

Another “Alien” study, this time it is the great Harry Dean Stanton as Brett. This is the digital painting of Brett. It was created using custom brushes and channel operations from Painter and Photoshop.

This is a detailed image of Brett once the intaglio has been created and integrated into the illustration. The files using bloat pretty large with all of the layers used to created the final image, but I have been working on streamlining some of the process to make sure the file is not too large, causing the applications to crash.

This is the final study for Brett. It was created using Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.
