The late 70’s and early 80’s were a great time to be a kid. We had these great film makers like Lucas, Spielberg, and Scott who gave us these stories on worlds far and near populated by characters with depth, like Roy Batty. Blade Runner was another seminal point in film in that era and has influenced countless storytellers across mediums since it hit the screen in 1982. Rutger Hauer’s role was an example of perfect casting with a protaganist that had more depth than its original computer programming.

With a nod to the original one-sheets, I have also created an alternative movie poster focused on Roy’s character in “Blade Runner“. These illustrations were created using Corel Painter, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop.

Taxi Driver

Taxi Driver

Portrait of Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle from "Taxi Driver"

Been in a bit of funk lately, and trying desperately to get out of it. Not inspired much recently so I decided to experiment with a few subjects from the world of pop culture. This is a new portrait of Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle from Martin Scorsese’s 1976 “Taxi Driver”.

Really dove deep into the digital painting of De Niro and tried some variation to the intaglio; tried some larger strokes, à la Leyendecker, to add some texture and shape to the portrait.

These portraits were created using Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.

Star Wars

Star Wars

Empire Shadow Trooper helmet

Some days are better than others. And then some days, you got nothing. Feeling incredibly unmotivated, I turned to one of my favorite themes, “Star Wars“. Using my creative block as an opportunity to illustrate solely with my intaglio technique in creating this portrait of the classic Shadow Trooper helmet.

I wanted to further experiment with this technique and the stark design and contrast of the black Shadow Trooper helmet from Star Wars gave me the perfect canvas to play on.

Alternative movie poster for "Star Wars: A New Hope"

I started to like the look and how similar it seemed to a woodcut print. I used the portrait as the base for a Star Wars alternative movie poster and used the Aurebesh font as an homage to the great Japanese wood prints I admire.

These portraits were created using Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.

Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal as Hannibal Lecter was a cultural phenomenon. His ability to transform from an erudite conversationalist to heartless killer scared a generation of movie goers.

I used the portrait as the basis for an alternative movie poster for “Silence of the Lambs” to share on my social channels and PosterSpy account. These illustrations were created using Corel Painter, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop.

This study was focused on the interplay of the paint and intaglio layers to build up details as well as focus attention. This continues to be an exercise in transposing traditional techniques to digital paintings.

These portraits were created using Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.
