Bodhi

Portrait of Patrick Swayze

Portrait of the late Patrick Swayze as Bodhi, the thrill-seeking antagonist in the 1991 action film, “Point Break”. Directed by Katherin Bigelow and starred 2 of the biggest names: Swayze and Keanu Reeves.

Swayze played the heavy in this one as the leader of a crew of thieves called the Ex-Presidents who donned Halloween masks of Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan on a crime spree to support their adrenaline-fueled hobbies.

It’s a ridiculous premise, but loads of fun to watch Patrick Swayze at his prime and a young Keanue Reeves as he began his ascent to Hollywood stardom.

Gandalf

Gandalf

Portrait of Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf

Spent yesterday afternoon watching Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” extended cut yesterday. I had never seen this version and there was some fun things that answered some questions I had from the previous films, but it is a serious time committment.

I have been having some persistent creative block, so I took it as an opportunity to experiment with a portrait of the wonderful Sir Ian McKellen. This was just a small sketch portrait to help me work through some of my processes.

His portrayal as Gandalf across The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit franchises is probably the best thing in both films. There are great performances by many, but he really does steal the scenes he is in due to his commanding presence.

These portraits were created using Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.

Dino

Dino

Portrait of Dean Martin

Portrait of one of the original members of Hollywood’s Rat Pack and half of the legendary duo with Jerry Lewis, Dino Paul Crocetti or more commonly known as Dean Martin.

Detail of portrait of Dean Martin

Growing up as a grandson of Italian immigrants, there were not many positive Italian role models in the media; mostly criminals, gangsters, and mobsters across pop culture. From the days of Al Capone through Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” the depiction of Italians in America was forever intertwined with the criminal elements.

That perception modulated a bit due to the presence of Dean Martin as a singer, comedian, and actor starting in the 1940’s. Most famously paired with Jerry Lewis he was a popular role model in virtually every household in my, mostly Italian, town growing up and a huge favorite for all of my Italian relatives. He was a wonderful crooner and a likeable presence in the films of my youth.

This portrait was created using Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s last view of his student, Anakin Skywalker, as he battles Darth Vader in his climactic scene on the Death Star in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.

I remember seeing this film on the big screen at the Loews theater in New York City as a kid. This movie was the biggest thing in the world in 1977 and this scene where Vader and Obi-Wan battle on the Death Star was devastating to my 11-year-old self.

The universe of stories that George Lucas created and has continued to evolve throughout my life has been a welcome diversion. As he celebrates another birthday this past weekend, I want to acknowledge how much impact he has had through his work as a storyteller over these past 40+ years.

Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee

Portrait of Bruce Lee

Still working through a creative block these past few weeks. So, I painted a portrait of the great actor, activist, athlete, and martial arts master Bruce Lee in an homage to him and the great portraitist Tony Stella.

Detail of portrait of Bruce Lee

Tony Stella has an amazing feel to all of his paintings and I tried to capture a little of his aura with this looser portrait of the great Kung Fu master, Bruce Lee.

I grew up admiring this legendary performer and athlete so much that while in college I began studying Kung Fu – and was taught by a man who was trained by the same master who had taught Bruce Lee all those years ago.

These portraits were created using Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.

My first licensed piece of art work for the Halloween franchise and part of Printed in Blood’s Halloween art book collaborative.

I remember seeing this as a kid and being scared out of my wits…John Carpenter changed the face of horror with this film and made a lifelong fan of the genre. Jamie Lee Curtis became a star through her performance in this film, while Michael Myers forever became associated with Halloween.

My inspiration for this piece was Magritte’s surrealistic images of bright skies of darkened streets and buildings. The Strode house was created in Illustrator and then painted as the base of the image. Michael’s face was painted using custom cloud brushes I created specifically for this concept.

You can purchase a copy of the book through Printed in Blood’s website as well as a print of this image from our friends at Poster Posse – that link will go live in a few days so check back for updates.
