Captain Marvel

Portrait of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel

This started out, merely, as an exercise in effects and techniques. As I got further into the ethereal effects of Captain Marvel, I continued working with custom brushes, channel operations, and painting to push the sketch a bit further.

As I continued to work on the sketch, it started to evolve on its own, a bit. Eventually spurring an alt-fan movie poster concept for the film, Captain Marvel. Brie Larson was great in the role and a wonderful addition to the litany of actors bringing to life most of my childhood heros. And, although this is merely a sketch of a larger idea, it is a good warmup for the day.

These images were created using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Corel Painter.

Planet of the Apes

Planet of the Apes

Portrait of Roddy McDowell as Caesar

One of the most impactfull movies of my childhood, outside of Star Wars, was Planet of the Apes. It was nothing I had ever seen before and those films led my lifelong fascination and appreciation of science fiction.

Watching the films through the lens of 2021 does not do the films justice and their impact on the social consciousness of the country after the close of a very turbulent time in our nation’s history. Having just come out of the Viet Nam war, riots, and Watergate scandal the nation was scarred, much like it is today.

The era, along with the ever-present possibility of nuclear war with the Soviet Union were central to the themes taken from these series of films.

Despite the smaller budgets and overall decrease in quality over the release of the initial series of these films, they remain popular with a segment of film afficianados.

There have been some remakes over the years which have garnered some success, but like many things out of Hollywood, the original is always better even if the production value might not have the same impact as films made today.

These illustrations were created using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Corel Painter.

Today Hero Complex Gallery is having the opening of their sketch card show. Unfortunately, I missed out the chance to be part of the show, but that won’t stop me from participating in the sketch card fun, so today’s #Baturday challenge was a couple of sketch cards featuring the caped crusader.

Both of these cards are on traditional-sized cards, measuring 2.5″ X 3.5″. Both were created from simple thumbnails and created using a quick pencil sketch and then inked using: Faber Castell Pitt Artist pens, Tombow brush pen, and Copic markers

Warmup sketch of Spongebob Squarepants

Cold morning here in Central Florida – with the wind chill it was about 30-degrees. And with that kind of weather who wouldn’t rather be in a pineapple under the sea?
