Sketch portrait of Jack Nicholson as the Joker

Sketch portrait of Jack Nicholson as the Joker, from Tim Burton’s 1989 classic film “Batman” which set the standard for super hero movies.

I remember seeing this film several times in the theater that summer – it was amazing that Jack Nicholson had signed on to be part of this film. It legitimized this genre after decades of stuff and nonsense and set the stage for the super hero films we have today.

This sketch was created using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Corel Painter.

Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker

Portrait of Luke Skywalker

When you illustrate one space twin, you have to paint the other one as well. As a follow-up to the portrait of Leia Organa, I wanted to paint a similarly-style portrait of her brother, Luke Skywalker.

This is a portrait of Mark Hamill in his iconic role as the young Jedi, Luke Skywalker, suited up in his orange flight suit and ready to fly off in his X-Wing Fighter.

This illustration was created using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Corel Painter.

Han Solo

Han Solo

Portrait of Harrison Ford as Han Solo

The third in this series of Star Wars portraits focuses on Harrison Ford as the smuggler, scoundrel, and scruffy-looking nerf herder from George Lucas’ universe of Star Wars stories. This tryptich completes the trio of original characters introduced to us in the original film, Star Wars (Episode IV), later subtitled A New Hope.

This illustration was created using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Corel Painter.

Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction

Portrait of Uma Thurman as Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction

Portrait of Uma Thurman as Mia Wallace from Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic from 1994, “Pulp Fiction”.

Weathered Pulp Fiction paperback cover

Once the portrait was completed, the concept was to create a pulp fiction paperback cover. The bold type and weathered look aligns with the pulp theme. I used several textures and custom brushes to age the book cover and make it feel like a worn paperback.

Alt-fan Pulp Fiction movie poster

The final step was to create the poster version of this illustration. Continuing the themes from the film, which was exceedingly gorey as Quentin Tarantino’s ouevre, I used spattering brushes to give it a sense of some of the hyper-violence of the film.

These illustrations were created using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Corel Painter.

Sketch portrait of Jack Napier, the Joker

Sketch portrait of Jack Napier, also known as The Joker. This is a non-traditional take on the character and was an experiment for me in some new brushes and techniques for the character.

Conceptual portrait of Jack Napier, the Joker

This image above was my original concept for the piece; I did not want it to resemble any one particular character while retaining some qualities of some of the most famous recent actors behind the grin.

Finally, an alternative fan movie poster concept for Jack – all about Jack Napier.

This was created using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Corel Painter.

Leia Organa

Leia Organa

Portrait of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa

Portrait of Carrie Fisher in her iconic role as Leia Organa, princess, general, and Jedi, from past 40-plus years of Star Wars stories brought to us by the great mind of George Lucas.

I first saw Star Wars in the theater that summer of 1977 – it was a Loews in New York City. My father took me and my brother to see the film; my father was never impressed with much in cinema but I remember hearing him mutter “wow” at the opening sequence of this film. That left an impact on me, almost as much as Carrie Fisher’s portrayal of Princess Leia Organa.

Like many boys of that age, I fell in love with the brave Princess who powered through that first film, and then through the subsequent sequels. My fondness for her has only grown over my lifetime. I have tried to capture her spirit several times in paintings over the years and will, most likely, continue with other illustrations in the future.

This portrait was created using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Corel Painter.
