Portrait of Batman as Shogun

Another Saturday means another #Baturday and today’s illustration is the Dark Knight as the Shogun of Gotham City. I have created a few other illustrations of super heroes as Samurai, like Spider-Man Samurai and Deadpool, based on Bandai’s line of models and had been wanting to do a version of Batman as well. I cobbled together some sketches from some source materials and created this version of a Samurai inspired Batman.

Cap’s Back

Cap’s Back

Captain America's helmet

I have made no excuses for my love of the character created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon; Captain America is one of my favorite super heroes in the comic book universe. Now when Chris Evans was cast, I was entirely sceptical of the choice due to his performance in the previous Marvel film, The Fantastic Four, as Johnny Storm. However, his performance as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) shows what can happen when the right: script, director, and actor work together to bring magic to the screen.

Cap’s arc in the first MCU was glorious and his end seemed entirely fitting with the story. Despite that, a lot of his fans were saddened to see him hang up his shield. Now, word has come out that he is in negotiating to return and this fan could not be happier!

This illustration of Cap’s helmet, was created using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Corel Painter.

Bob Parr outlines in Adobe Illustrator

Most everything I do, begins as a thumbnail in my moleskine sketchbook. This illustration of Bob Parr is derived directly from concept work done by the artists at Disney•Pixar and was merely an exercise in seeing if my current stylistic approach would work on a polished cartoon character like Bob Parr from The Incredibles

Bob Parr in Adobe Illustrator

I started, like most of my portraits in Adobe Illustrator creating shapes and fills with either flat colors or gradients. This blocking allows me to refine the composition and really establish a good base for the painting which is done in Adobe Photoshop.

Portrait of Bob Parr

Once in Adobe Photoshop, I have the ability to not only paint using my custom-made brushes, as well as the plethora of ones provided with the Adobe Creative Suite (read: Kyle Webster) but I can also use the massive capabilities of channel operations.

I am Bob Parr, book cover/poster design

These channel operations allow layers of “paint” and “line” to interact in a multitude of ways that can reinforce the effect I want my illustration to have on the viewer. This also allows me the chance to add effects, like lighting or rain, based on the subject matter of the painting.

All in all, it is a long process and akin to some of my traditional skills when I used to cut friskets for airbrush for paintings on my favorite Strathmore illustration board.
